What
Is UNIV?
UNIV is an annual research study on current issues affecting human
development where the university students play a decisive role.
It is one of the many projects of the
Instituto
per la Cooperzione Universitaria (ICU), an Italian NGO that promotes
initiatives of development and cooperation worldwide.
In order to channel the concerns and reflections of
the university students, it has been holding its annual research projects
and discussion groups in successive local and national phases.
It counts on the participation of more than 100, 000
students in more than 500 universities worldwide.

The Theme
The earth’s architectural design ensures cultural
diversity. Man being an
intelligent being has adapted to his material environment in particular
ways of life or cultures. The
fact that the earth is a sphere allows that different lifestyles arise
among different people around the globe.
Yet, among the phenomena that characterize the birth
of the 21st century is globalization, the tearing down of
borders. Information
technology has so advanced that it makes knowledge about every phenomenon
on the planet and peculiar societal experiences available to every
interested party. This intercultural communication has spurred the search for a
common language in most aspects of human life.
But there exists the danger of impoverishing culture
to uniformity of experiences, removing a wealth of knowledge generated by
a diversity of civilizations. Conformity
to a single culture results as the creative spirit of each culture ceases
to flourish. Human creativity
that serves as a foundation for the wealth of nations then becomes
stifled.
Restoring and preserving human creativity entails a
renewed search for man, lost in the chain of global communication.
It is time to evaluate the risks and benefits of a global community
keeping in mind that globalization must uphold man’s dignity by giving
him a fair share of the earth’s patrimony.
UNIV invites people in the university to think, to
go to the core of the issues of globalization, and to make the Asian
experience an authentic celebration of its own cultural patrimonial
heritage.
